Poland's first surgery for a giant liver tumour — UCK WUM

A UCK WUM surgical team has successfully completed Poland's first 11-hour operation to remove a giant liver tumour using transplantation techniques.

The procedure involved removing the organ from the patient's body, precisely excising the tumour under controlled hypothermia and then re-implanting the healthy portion of the liver.

Working in a "bloodless field," the surgeons had full control over structures inaccessible in a conventional operation.

Operations of this kind give patients with advanced liver tumours a chance — cases previously considered inoperable or not eligible for a standard transplant.
